This two book series is the story of Toulouse Blanc, a shoemaker. His family in Eastern France receives a letter from an American relative promising great wealth if one would make the travel to Sacramento, California to meet him. Toulouse is chosen and he travels to the American West from France in hopes of receiving some of the fortune of the long lost relative, Uncle Ethan. When he gets there, no Ethan Blanc is heard of, leaving him stranded in America with no way to go back to France. The mystery of who wrote his family the letter and why becomes his life riddle. However, as he tries to survive in the West, many things happens to him and he meets quite a few people who have a huge impact on his life. This duology is a delight to read. Some of the places mentioned in this series are real while some aren’t. This historical fiction has mystery, suspense, travel, plot twists, and endearing characters of different walks of life.
